Packed with whole grains (oats, quinoa, barley), this hearty, hands-off recipe will become your morning go-to. Top it any way you wish.

Ingredients

Slow-Cooker Whole-Grain Porridge

  • 1 cup steel-cut oats
  • 1/2 cup red quinoa
  • 1/2 cup brown rice
  • 1/2 cup pearled barley
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 3/4 tsp. Kosher salt
  • 7 1/2 cups water
  • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter

Cheddar Bacon Toppings

  • Grated Cheddar
  • Crumbled bacon
  • Chopped Dates
  • sliced chives

Banana and Grape Toppings

  • Sliced bananas
  • Sliced red grapes
  • Dollop of peanut butter

Fried Egg and Smoked Salmon Toppings

  • Fried egg
  • smoked salmon
  • Sliced scallions
  • capers
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Fig and Pistachio Toppings

  • fresh figs
  • Toasted pistachios
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg
  • Drizzle of honey

Orange and Coconut Toppings

  • Sliced oranges
  • toasted coconut
  • toasted pecans
  • ground cinnamon

Directions

    1. Step 1Stir together steel cut oats, red quinoa, brown rice, and pearled barley, milk, salt, and water in greased, 6-quart slow-cooker insert.
    2. Step 2Cover and cook until grains are tender, on high for 3 to 4 hours or on low for 7 to 8 hours. Stir in butter. Serve with desired toppings:
    3. Step 3For Cheddar Bacon top with grated Cheddar, crumbled bacon, chopped dates, and sliced chives.
    4. Step 4For Banana and Grape top with sliced bananas, sliced red grapes, and a dollop of peanut butter.
    5. Step 5For Fried Egg and Smoked Salmon, top with a fried egg, smoked salmon, sliced scallions, capers, and freshly ground black pepper.
    6. Step 6For Figs and Pistachio top with fresh figs, toasted pistachios, a pinch of nutmeg and a drizzle of honey.
    7. Step 7For Orange and Coconut top with sliced oranges, toasted coconut, toasted pecans, and ground cinnamon.
