This fun take on the classic Tequila Sunrise recalls that old adage about sailors being wary of red skies at dawn. And we'd concur: This is definitely a better drink for the evening hours. (You might even call it a sailor's delight!) You can stick with the traditional tequila base, or switch to the more seafaring rum — both work delightfully well in this fruit-forward tropical sipper, but either way we recommend using the freshest, sweetest watermelon available. Be warned: you won't regret it!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups watermelon chunks
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 8 oz. tequila or dark rum, divided
  • Maraschino cherries and pineapple wedges, for garnish

Directions

    1. Step 1Purée watermelon in a blender until smooth, about 30 seconds. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve. (This will yield about 1 cup juice.)
    2. Step 2Fill highball glasses with ice. Top with pineapple juice, then tequila and watermelon juice, dividing evenly. Garnish with a cherry and pineapple wedge.
