The heatwave has moved life outdoors. We’re eating supper in the garden, lingering over drinks on holiday terraces and sitting outside long after sunset. As evening turns to night, you may have found yourself looking up and wondering: what exactly am I looking at?

This August, start with the Summer Triangle. Made up of three bright stars – Vega, Deneb and Altair – this enormous pattern is one of the easiest features for stargazing beginners to identify. Its clear shape and long visibility also make it a useful landmark from which to begin navigating the night sky.

“The stars are nice and bright, so even in comparatively poor viewing conditions, they are going to be the easiest to spot in that region of the sky,” says Dr Edward Bloomer, senior astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich. Better still, unlike some patterns of stars, the Summer Triangle “actually looks like its namesake!”

Once you recognise it, what initially appears to be a bewildering scattering of stars begins to resemble a map. The Triangle provides a starting point for identifying the constellations around it and, under sufficiently dark skies, the Milky Way passing through it.

So, how do you find it – and where can it lead you next? Below, Dr Bloomer explains how to use the Summer Triangle to begin navigating the night sky, with no telescope, binoculars or previous astronomical knowledge required.

What is the Summer Triangle?

Despite its name, the Summer Triangle isn’t a constellation. It’s an asterism – a recognisable pattern of stars – comprising three stars from three different constellations.

Vega belongs to Lyra, the Lyre; Deneb is part of Cygnus, the Swan; and Altair belongs to Aquila, the Eagle. Draw imaginary lines between them and they form a vast triangle across the summer sky.

Its simple shape, brightness and visibility make it a useful first landmark for anyone learning to navigate the stars.

“A straightforward shape, good visibility and being up in the sky for a fairly long period give budding astronomers lots of chances to find it,” says Dr Bloomer. That, he adds, is “much more encouraging than objects that need lots of equipment or are only visible for a short stretch”.

Why is August a good time to see it?

The Summer Triangle is visible from the UK at different times for much of the year, but in August it is high in the sky after sunset, so there’s no need to stay up until the early hours.

“By the time the Sun goes down, the asterism will be nice and high in the night sky, so it is quite straightforward to locate and comfortable to view,” says Dr Bloomer.

Warm evenings also keep us outdoors for longer, while summer holidays may take us away from the light pollution of towns and cities, giving us a clearer view.

How to find the Summer Triangle

Choose a clear evening and the darkest spot you can. You may see the three stars from your garden, but a rural cottage, campsite or quiet stretch of coast should reveal more.

After sunset, look high towards the south. The Triangle will gradually arc westwards as the night progresses.

Start with Altair, which appears as its lowest point when viewed from the UK. “From there, Vega as the right-side vertex is a little easier to spot than the left-hand vertex Deneb, though there isn’t much in it,” says Dr Bloomer.

Don’t expect a small, neat shape: the Summer Triangle covers a huge area of sky and is best viewed without magnification.

If a reddish star farther west catches your eye, you may have found Arcturus instead. “If you spot it, pivot east,” advises Dr Bloomer.

“Stars will twinkle, and planets won't (to anywhere near the same degree), so they should be easy to distinguish from each other,” adds Dr Bloomer.

Avoid this common stargazing mistake

Once you’ve found your spot, don’t undo your good work by repeatedly checking a stargazing app. According to Dr Bloomer, looking at a phone is one of the most common mistakes beginners make.

Your eyes need time to become sensitive to the darkness, allowing fainter stars gradually to emerge. Each glance at a bright screen interrupts that process.

“You need to let your eyes become as sensitive as possible, and that means letting yourself adjust to the dark for 20 to 30 minutes,” says Dr Bloomer. “If you stare at artificial lights, you’ll ruin your dark adaptation and have to start over again.”

Put your phone away, be patient and give the night sky time to reveal itself.

The Triangle can help you identify the three constellations containing its stars: Lyra, Aquila and Cygnus. Cygnus, or the Swan, can also be recognised as the Northern Cross, a second pattern formed by its brightest stars.

From there, you could look for the Great Square of Pegasus. “The legs are a bit tricky, but the stars making up the Square of Pegasus are quite easy to spot,” says Dr Bloomer.

Can you see the Milky Way?

The Milky Way passes through the Summer Triangle, but spotting it from the UK requires clear weather, properly dark skies and patience.

“It is possible to see with the naked eye, but you need to get somewhere very dark and let your eyes adjust fully,” says Dr Bloomer. “The countryside is best, or the coast facing in the right direction.”

Move away from streetlights and illuminated buildings, then look for a faint, hazy band stretching across the sky. Binoculars or a telescope can magnify individual features, but they also restrict your field of view. Looking without them makes it easier to appreciate the Milky Way’s broad arc.

So next time you step outside after dark, put down your phone and look south. Find Altair, Vega and Deneb and you’ll have your first landmarks in the night sky – with a whole universe waiting to be explored.
