9 hallway runners for an inviting entryway

Give your guests a warm welcome

Your hallway is the first place to greet you (or your guests) when you enter your home, so it must be a welcoming space. In the UK, these transitional spaces are often narrow and compact, which can make styling the area challenging. But with a stylish runner, you can easily add colour and texture to protect your floors and make a statement.

Interior designer Nicola Rodriguez suggests opting for rugs in a lighter shade than the walls, especially if your hallway is smaller. "This will make it feel larger by reflecting any natural light," she explains.

How long should a hallway runner be?

The length of the runner, of course, depends on the length of the hallway, so measure the area carefully before you shop. There are also some aesthetic conventions that you should follow to ensure your new rug looks its best in situ. "A runner shouldn't cover the entire space of your hallway," says Nicola. "Keep four to six inches on either side to avoid it touching the walls."

Can you put a hallway runner over carpet?

The short answer? Yes! "There are no rules, but be mindful to regularly clean the carpet underneath the runner to avoid the area underneath flattening under the rug," Nicola elaborates. "Adding a runner also adds protection to the carpet below it, so it can also be a savvy investment in that sense."
