Solar fence lights are a quick and easy way to add ambience to your garden. Ideal for lighting up your patio, gazebo or driveway, they can either be strewn from hooks or installed permanently, depending on their type and purpose.

Since solar lights run off energy captured from sunlight, you won't have to worry about frequently replacing their batteries or hiding unsightly power cables. Simply hang up your low-maintenance lighting and relax.

Families with young children will be pleased to note that solar lighting is generally safe to use, with very low risk of power trips and overheating. Just make sure little ones can’t get ahold of any rechargeable batteries.

How do solar lights work?

Solar lights work by absorbing sunlight during the day. “The solar panel soaks up the sun's rays to charge the rechargeable battery inside,” explains Emily Kelsey at Lights4Fun. “When the battery has enough charge and the daylight sensor detects dusk, the solar lights will begin to shine.”

Bear in mind that your solar lights should be positioned in such a way that they receive a good amount of sunlight throughout the day. If they're installed somewhere shady, they won't charge as effectively.

Do solar lights work in winter?

The downside to solar lights is that they are heavily reliant on good weather, which means on cloudier days they may not shine as bright — not ideal for those of us in the UK. The less sunlight the solar panel absorbs, the less charge the battery receives, and so the lights will illuminate for a shorter period of time.

Emily suggests putting your solar lights away during the winter and bringing them back out in spring and summer, when the weather warms up and the days begin to get longer and sunnier. This will prolong the life of your lights so they will once again illuminate your garden in the finer weather.
