This time of year, we’re obsessed with cozy vibes—and nothing brings comfort and warmth (literally!) quite like a fireplace. Picture it: a roaring fire on a chilly day, a pair of comfortable chairs pulled close to the hearth, a mug of hot cocoa in hand. To help bring that vision to life, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite fireplace designs to inspire this space in your home. Whether you’re looking for traditional living room fireplace designs or looks for the bedroom or dining room, you’ll find beautiful photos to spark your next décor idea.
Much like architecture, fireplace mantel design ideas come in a variety of styles. Classic brick fireplaces are among the most common, while other traditional designs feature rustic stone or reclaimed wood. A fresh coat of paint can give dated materials a whole new life (check out our all-time favorite paint colors for inspiration), while modern fireplaces often feature clean lines and smooth finishes.
You’ll also find plenty of ideas below for decorating your mantel for Christmas, what to hang on the wall surrounding your fireplace (televisions, artwork, mirrors, and gallery walls are popular choices), and even outdoor fireplace inspiration. Whatever your taste, the fireplace mantel ideas you’ll see here offer a charming focal point to design a room around.
Here are more ways to cozy up your home all year round:
In this refined Mississippi hunting lodge, a grouping of cozy furniture beckons guests to gather around the living room's fireplace crafted of Tennessee limestone. Framed pieces from the family's personal collection, including wildlife watercolors and other treasures, decorate the walls.
In the living room of this Wisconsin farmhouse, a cast-iron fixture generates enough heat to warm the entire house during the the cold winter months. Framed up by a painted mantel, the firebox features salvaged bricks for a rustic touch in this new build. Evergreen garland with strings of vintage bells and block-print stockings lend a seasonal touch during the holidays.

For a layered mantel, add vintage flair, like these trophies in varying shapes and heights. For Christmas, they twirl up easily when filled with sprigs of greenery and ornaments. Tuck in fresh flowers and other seasonal decor the rest of the year. Holiday cards displayed in vintage flower frogs hold cards—so clever!
No mantel? No problem! For a statement-making embellishment for the holidays (and well into the new year!), frame your fireplace with lush garland. We love how this greenery is a little long to puddle casually on the floor. A matching wreath adorned with silver bells adds a just-right touch for the season.
With a coat of white paint, this brick fireplace is ready for any season. Glass hurricane candle holders offer a pretty glow year-round. For a decidedly coastal theme, a life ring crowns the space and is a clever substitute for a traditional wreath. Come Christmas, add a bow and a cluster of ornaments, and you’re all set!
The focal point of this fireside sitting area is debatable. A Norwegian rosemale plate crowning the fireplace provides striking decor, while a pair of custom chairs covered in a woven fabric, an ottoman in a red embroidery-like fabric, and window seats with comfy pillows bring maximum coziness.
The wonderfully weathered and worn original mantel brings levity to this pattern-filled dining room. With a backdrop of whimsical nature-inspired Josef Frank–designed wallpaper and a graphic Indian dhurrie draped over the vintage table, the room gets a real graphic punch. Bright vintage pitchers line the mantel.
In this historic farmhouse, the charming fireplace is set on an angle in the dining room. Combined with the curry tones of the room's wallpaper, the original brick hearth gives the space built-in warmth. An early-1900s rooster weather vane above gives the space a decidedly country kick.

Crisp white rules in this ranch house living room—from the pair of practical slipcovered sofas to the wash of white paint on the walls and brick fireplace. A handwoven striped rug offers texture and pattern underfoot. The wicker chairs were a bargain score for just $100 and revived with paint. Wood-Burning Kitchen Fireplace

In this charming eat-in kitchen, the focal point is a massive wood-burning fireplace (one of four in the house). Formerly used as andirons, a pair of brass anchors flank an antique sailboat diorama on the painted mantel. Adding to the sense of seaside history, a cluster of oyster shells hang along the side. The Irish pine table is complemented by black-painted Windsor chairs and a long bench.
In this handsome color-drenched living room, the walls, mantel, and window trim are all painted an immersive watery blue-green hue. A pair of comfy sofas piled with pillows in spice-toned block prints and stripes invites long days of lounging.
In this character-filled Washington home, a mantel made from a tree felled on-site tops a fireplace clad in white Zellige tile. On cool nights, homeowners Anne and Richard De Wolf love to sink into this cozy spot.
To warm up her farmhouse living room, designer Christina Salway had the Colonial-style home’s original chimney restored. After building a brick hearth, she added a black cast-iron stove. Fire wood is stacked on either side for easy access.
We’re not sure what’s cozier here: the pair of chinoiserie-upholstered armchairs, the toile wallcovering, or the cozy fireplace. All three make for a winning guest room decor trifecta!
Rustic moss rock not only surrounds the fireplace in this Minnesota lake cottage but also lines the entire wall, with a stone mantel shelf stretching the width of it. Music is the focal point of the built-in shelves on the left with a vintage vinyl collection on display (and a speaker cleverly tucked above the television!).
“Lighting the first fire of the season is so magical,” says homeowner Justin Reis. “It’s the perfect sort of transitional moment to get cozy.” We couldn’t agree more, Justin! The rustic mantel surround echoes the weathered floorboards and hand-hewn exposed beams. The warming cabinet above the living room fireplace offers a spot to tuck in decorative collected treasures.
For Amy Whyte, the homeowner of this Virginia cottage, her favorite part of the living room is the brick fireplace, with its unique cast-iron grate. “Its backplate has a fox on it,” she says. “It was like a little surprise tucked beyond the hearth.” That fox inspired woodland motifs throughout the house like the oil painting above the mantel.
The focal point of this Georgia lake house great room is its extra-tall fieldstone fireplace, flanked by appealingly asymmetrical built-ins—one with hidden storage, the other open for books and display.
A rustic wood beam crowns the large brick fireplace in Alison and Jim Luckman’s dining area. Above, Jim Strickland and Aaron Daily from Atlanta-based architectural firm Historical Concepts, designed wood paneling that includes a simple mantel just big enough to display the Luckmans’ beautiful blue and white porcelain collection.
This watery blue hue is the perfect complement to the rustic wood paneling in this circa-1920 bungalow. Plus now it’s a dynamic focal point in this cozy family room. “Originally, we wanted to restore the brick, but it starting bleeding red because of some weird finish applied in years past. We had no choice but to paint it, which ended up helping tie the whole room together,” says designer Erica Harrison of Detroit-based design firm Hudson and Sterling.
