LEGO is constantly pushing the envelope with creative new sets, but for every new build, the brand retires older ones. If a set has been around for a few years, there's a strong chance LEGO will stop making more—which means once it's sold out, it's gone for good (at its regular price, at least).

If you're on the hunt for rare or recently discontinued LEGO sets, I'm here to help: Amazon has a whole section of hard-to-find LEGO sets that are either seasonal, retired, or low in stock. I’ve highlighted a few of my favorites below, like the often out-of-stock Back to the Future DeLorean.

Pro tip from a LEGO collector herself: When shopping for LEGO sets, always double-check who the seller is—and do a bit of quick math before adding to cart so you don't overpay. (Typical sets average about 13 cents per brick, with a few exceptions for highly technical blocks or extra minifigures, but resellers sometimes charge more than double that.) If you see something on your wish list here, you'll want to grab it before it's gone; since originally writing this story, all of the sets I originally selected sold out.

Before LEGO launched the interactive Smart Play, this was one of the only sets to include a sound brick. Once built, the hat will sort you into a house with a variety of different faces. There’s also a button to make the facial expressions move.

Great Scott! Not only is this set often sold out, but it's available and on sale right now. It features the famed DeLorean from the Back to the Future films, and the car can be built in three different ways. It also comes with Doc and Marty McFly minifigures.

LEGO Optimus Prime

Optimus Prime

This Optimus Prime LEGO set is more than meets the eye. Once you build the Transformers icon in robot mode, you can fold the pieces down to convert it into a truck—just like the movies. This is a great gift idea for the “big kid” on your list.

Ages 18 and up.

The LEGO Technic line is notable for the scale model size and the attention to detail in every build. Assembling a car is a way for growing kids to expand their LEGO building into moving parts and satisfy their curiosity about what is under the hood. The Huracán has a realistic-looking V10 engine and the lime green color will make this stand out on a shelf.

If they’re constantly building, this remix set is a way for them to come up with endless creations. This set comes with the pieces they’ll need to create a helicopter, fire truck, and submarine. Each vehicle has modular pieces, meaning they’ll be able to mix and match the fire engine’s body with a hose and rotors, or imagine a submersible with wheels. Ages 7+

I love the Creator sets for kids (or adults) who simply love the process of building LEGO. Once you’ve created the tiger pictured here, you can take it apart and rebuild it as a red panda or a koi fish.

There are a lot—and I mean, a lot—of Harry Potter LEGO sets, but this model of Hagrid’s Hut is one of my favorites. It comes with five minifigures, along with Norbert the Dragon and Fang the Dog. The roof comes off, so you can actually play with this set when you’re done.
